Lacustrine Urban Blue Spaces: Low Availability and Inequitable Distribution in the Most Populated Cities in Mexico

Lacustrine blue spaces provide benefits to the urbanites and wildlife habitat. Their availability varies depending on city in which they are established intra-urban social interactions. We analyzed presence, distribution, size of lentic water bodies Mexico’s 145 most populated cities. searched for patterns their distribution concerning demographic, socioeconomic, geographic data, aiming understand socio-ecological interactions digitized lacustrine obtain number per city, total surface, area space inhabitant, surface as a percentage city’s area. tested relationships between population, hydrological regions, urban marginalization index through linear generalized models. delimited 1834 spaces, finding almost two-thirds them artificial. presence Mexican cities were generally low, except regions close Gulf Mexico. decreased increased. The lack equitable provision at national level has implications planning land management. Blue should maximize ecosystem services’ whole society promote cities’ sustainability resilience.
